What is the ACK Give Back Project?

Each year there are thousands of kids on the spectrum that don’t get the proper therapy that they need to develop and thrive. At ACK we were tired of seeing these families get turned away and decided to fix it. We contacted private donors that believe in our cause and built up a fund to help support families in need.

Our goal with the ACK Give Back project is to help 613 families a year by providing their child with the autism therapy they deserve as well as funding for household supplies, camps, and vacations.

Using insurance instead of OAP (Ontario Autism Program) funding at an autism center for kids can have several implications. Here are some points to consider:

Benefits

  1. Broader Coverage: Insurance may cover a wider range of services and therapies, potentially offering more options than OAP funding.
  2. Flexibility in Providers: Families might have more freedom to choose specific therapists or centers that accept their insurance.
  3. Immediate Access: Insurance might provide quicker access to services, especially if there are waiting lists for OAP funding.

Considerations

  1. Policy Limitations: Check the specific details of the insurance plan, as some may have caps on therapy hours or specific exclusions for autism-related services.
  2. Co-Payments and Deductibles: Families should be prepared for potential out-of-pocket costs, including co-pays or deductibles, which can add up.
  3. Authorization Requirements: Some insurance plans require pre-authorization for services, which can introduce delays.
  4. Documentation and Claims: Navigating the claims process can be complex, requiring thorough documentation and potentially leading to disputes.

Recommendations

  • Review Insurance Plans: Families should thoroughly understand their insurance benefits and coverage limits related to autism services.
  • Consult with Providers: Speak with the autism center about which insurances they accept and how they handle billing.
  • Consider Hybrid Approaches: In some cases, a combination of insurance and OAP funding might provide the best coverage for comprehensive care.

Switching to insurance-based funding could enhance accessibility to needed services, but it’s essential to weigh the benefits against potential challenges.

The cost and level of therapy will depend on the child’s age, level of diagnosis and social-economic situation,we are covered by oap core clinical services and insurance

ACK has been providing kids on the spectrum with autism therapy for over 20 years.  We strive to see your child first, and their diagnosis second.  Our autism therapy is based on the scientifically proven Miller Method of therapy alongside Floortime /DIR.

Our methodology has helped thousands of children develop the skills they need to reach their potential.

Autism therapy, often an essential service for individuals on the autism spectrum, is generally classified under broader mental health services. This includes a variety of approaches such as behavioral therapies, developmental models, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychotherapy, among others.

Behavioral approaches, like Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), focus on reinforcing positive behaviors and reducing those that may be harmful or affect learning. Developmental models concentrate on the progression of language, social, and cognitive skills. Occupational therapy aims to improve daily living skills, and speech therapy helps with communication challenges typical for those with autism.

Psychotherapy is also part of the spectrum of therapeutic approaches. It can involve individual sessions tailored to the needs of the autistic person, family therapy, and group therapy sessions. Psychotherapy for autism can address a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges that can accompany autism.

Understanding that each individual on the autism spectrum has unique needs, treatment plans are often personalized. This means that the inclusion of autism therapy within the domain of mental health services ensures a comprehensive approach to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in managing symptoms, developing new skills, and improving their quality of life.

Ontario Autism Program Funding-Ontario autism program interim one-time funding primary caregiver application

Families of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Ontario can receive financial support. The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) has undergone multiple changes recently. For more details, you can read “Ontario Autism Program: a short history” or “Ontario Autism Program Announcement.” Who is eligible for OAP funding? To qualify for the funding, your child must:

  • Have a diagnosis of autism from a qualified professional
  • Be under 18 years old
  • Live in Ontario

To apply for the OAP, you need to fill out and submit the Ontario Autism Program Registration Form. You can also contact 1-888-444-4530 for assistance.

The program is currently transitioning from a childhood budget model to a needs-based therapy model. If you had previously registered for the OAP, you do not need to register again.

In February 2021, the Province introduced a Pilot Program to transition 600 children to the new needs-based funding model. Families would be contacted and invited to participate, and the process would involve:

  • Inviting the child to participate and enrolling them if the family agrees
  • A Care Coordinator meeting with the family and child to assess the child’s needs using a standardized assessment tool and determining the hours of therapy they require
  • Providing funds to the family to purchase the prescribed intensity of therapy for their child

No further details on this have been released.

As the program evolves, children on the autism spectrum fall into four categories:

  • Waitlist
  • Behaviour Plan Budget (Legacy funding)
  • Childhood Budget
  • Interim One-Time Funding

Families not invited to participate can continue to receive their current funding for another round. If they were receiving Legacy funding, their budgets would be renewed, while those with Interim One-Time funding or childhood budgets would receive a second funding instalment.
