Play Therapy for Children in Vaughan & Thornhill

Gentle, child-centered support for emotional and developmental growth. At Autism Center for Kids Inc. in Vaughan (serving Thornhill and surrounding areas), we specialize in evidence-based play therapy for children. Play therapy is a unique form of psychotherapy that uses play as the medium for healing and learning. It allows children – especially those with autism, ADHD, anxiety, or behavioral challenges – to express thoughts and feelings they cannot yet put into words. As child psychotherapist Jodi Miller explains, “Children naturally communicate through play. Through careful engagement… their thoughts, feelings and behaviours can be explored in a non-threatening, age-appropriate, creative and positive way.”. In our serene, play-friendly therapy rooms, children engage in activities (drawing, role-play, board games, sensory play, etc.) that both entertain and heal. These activities are chosen to match each child’s interests and developmental level, so therapy feels safe and fun. Studies show that such play-based interventions can improve social skills, emotional regulation, and communication in children with autism and other conditions.

Our Services

We offer a range of therapies to support each child’s needs. All services are delivered in a child-friendly, engaging way that focuses on strengths and interests. Our main services include:

01

Play Therapy

The core of our work. Children play with toys, art, sand, role-play, and games to work through emotional or social challenges. This approach is backed by research: play therapy helps children transition from acting out to expressing feelings through symbolic play. For example, a shy child might draw a superhero to show inner strength, or a child with repetitive behaviors might learn flexibility through board games. Through play, we teach coping skills (sharing, patience, problem-solving) in a non-confrontational way

02

Psychotherapy & Counseling

For children who can engage verbally, we provide talk therapy adapted for young minds. We use techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and family therapy to address anxiety, anger, grief, or trauma. Whether with toys, drawings or conversation, therapists help children label emotions and practice new behaviors. Our psychotherapy is always developmentally appropriate: young children might “play out” a problem with puppets, while older kids might use art or metaphor. We also offer parent counseling and training – for example, teaching parents behavior management strategies – since a child’s progress is strongest when family members are involved

03

Miller Method Therapy

This is an ABA-alternative program designed for children on the autism spectrum and with severe learning challenges. Developed by Drs. Arnold and Eileen Miller in Boston, the Miller Method is a holistic, developmental approach that addresses communication, sensory needs, motor skills, and emotional regulation all at once. Unlike traditional ABA, it uses child-led activities like elevated board exercises, sign language, and play to enhance interaction. The goal is to build the whole child’s capacities in a gentle, motivating way. We are one of the few centers in the area offering this specialized method.

Each of these services is personalized. After an initial evaluation, our team creates a treatment plan to fit your child’s unique profile. We frequently integrate methods: for instance, a play therapy session might incorporate storytelling or role-play (an approach shown to boost social skills in children with ADHD). Importantly, we treat more than autism – see below for the wide range of issues we address.

Beyond Autism: We Treat ADHD, Anxiety & More

Not just an autism center – we help children facing a wide range of challenges. Play therapy and counseling are effective for many emotional and behavioral issues. For example:
ADHD & Behavior Issues: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder often benefit from the structure of play therapy. In play, they learn to wait turns, follow rules, and channel energy. One study found that combined play therapy and storytelling significantly improved self-expression, self-control, and cooperation in children with ADHD. Our activities (like sand play or guided games) give them practice in these areas in a way that feels like fun.
Anxiety & Depression: Play-based interventions can help anxious or depressed children. Through puppets or role-play, a child can “tell” the therapist about frightening thoughts or sad feelings indirectly. As the CDC notes, psychological therapy (including play) teaches coping skills and can reduce symptoms in common childhood conditions like anxiety and depression. We focus on emotional regulation techniques (deep breathing with bubbles, emotion thermometers with drawings) within therapy.
Social and Emotional Difficulties: Struggles with friendships, shyness, or aggression are common reasons families seek us. In group or one-on-one play therapy, children rehearse social scenarios (sharing toys, introducing themselves) in a safe space. Gradually, they gain skills like empathy and self-confidence. Play therapy has been shown to improve peer interaction in autism and social skills generally.
Family & Trauma: Sometimes behavior changes are linked to family stress or past trauma. We provide a stable, supportive setting where children can act out stressors through play (e.g. using dolls to reenact a move to a new school). Therapists are trained to gently guide the play towards healing outcomes. If needed, we can incorporate family sessions to strengthen support at home.

What is play therapy and who can benefit?

Play therapy is a therapeutic approach where a child’s natural medium – play – is used to address psychological issues. It’s based on the idea that play is how children communicate and learn. Any child who has difficulty expressing feelings verbally (due to age, trauma, or developmental issues) can benefit. Research shows play therapy can help with anxiety, behavioral problems, ADHD, autism, and even trauma. It helps kids develop coping and social skills in a low-pressure way

How does the Miller Method differ from traditional therapy?

The Miller Method is a holistic, developmental therapy mainly used for autism. Unlike behaviorist approaches like ABA, Miller Method focuses on the child’s whole development through movement and communication. For example, it uses an “elevated board” to improve posture and walking, while simultaneously teaching sign language or social games. It addresses motor, sensory and emotional needs together. Many parents choose it as an ABA alternative because it can be gentler and more engaging for the child.

What ages and issues do you treat?

We treat children from preschool through early adolescence (approximately 3–12 years old), though this can vary by individual readiness. We help children with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety disorders, oppositional behaviors, learning challenges, sensory processing issues, and more. As noted earlier, play therapy is versatile: it has shown benefits in improving social skills and emotional regulation in autism, and studies also report significant improvements in self-control and cooperation in children with ADHD. We conduct a thorough assessment to identify each child’s needs.

How long does therapy last before we see results?

Every child is different. Some children start showing positive changes (like calmer behavior or increased speech) within a few weeks. Others may need several months of weekly sessions. Research suggests that play therapy often requires a series of sessions (for example, 15–20 sessions) for substantial progress. We regularly review progress and set new goals with families. Our aim is gradual, lasting improvement in skills and self-confidence

Is play therapy covered by insurance?

Many extended health insurance plans cover Registered Psychotherapy and counseling, which may include play therapy. Coverage varies by plan and therapist credentials. We can provide invoices and receipts (with our R.P. number) for insurance claims. We also offer a free initial consultation to discuss fees and options.

Do you offer services in Thornhill as well?

Yes. Our clinics in Vaughan serve the Thornhill area (just a short drive away). Some of our therapists may also offer home or school-based consultations in Thornhill with special arrangements. We strive to be accessible to families across York Region.

How can I get started?

Simply contact us by phone or email to arrange a convenient time for an intake. In the first visit, we will learn about your child’s history and concerns, and often have a short, informal play session. Then we design a treatment plan. Parents always have time at the end of the session to ask questions. Our goal is to make the process smooth and supportive from day one.
